Making the most of a short stopover on a long overseas trip

Many of the most popular travels destinations are extremely remote from many of the common travel destinations around the world. Australia can be a stepping stone to some of these locations such as Indonesia or New Zealand.  If you only have a limited stop over to experience Australia between other destinations here are some tips to making the most of your time.

Organise an airport transfer

The last thing you want to cope with after a long flight where you may or may not have had enough sleep is negotiating a new taxi system and sorting out payments in a foreign currency. Instead, organise an airport transfer to take you straight to your hotel and sort out the payment ahead of time. That way you can stumble into the transfer vehicle and snooze, then head straight to bed so that you can hit the tourist sites after a nap and a shower.

Find a centrally located hotel

While it can be more expensive to get a hotel room in the centre of the city, hiring a centrally located room leaves you closer to the main sites so that you can fit more into your day. If you book a room further out you may spend more time travelling and less time enjoying your limited stopover. Your airline may have some suggestions on hotel facilities that are popular with their short stopover passengers, who might enjoy different locations to other longer stay customers or business customers.

Adjust to the time zone as quickly as possible

Wh you arrive you may be tempted to head straight to bed to catch up on some sleep. However, if you arrive early in the morning it's best to have a short nap and hit the streets to see some sites. Getting moving and being exposed to sunlight is a great way to let your body know that this is daytime and the best time to be awake. This can help you get through the early stages of jet lag as quickly as possible so that you can enjoy your holiday. Try to also stagger your meals, so that you avoid eating at night and eating at Australian meal times to help adjust your metabolism to the new time zone.

Getting to your accommodation as quickly as possible can help you to adjust to the new time zone and make the most of your stopover in Australia.
